Meeting of 2003-07/11
CEMETERY COMMISSIONERS MEETING OF JULY 11, 2003

PRESENT:  Herman E. Hasenjager, Robert E. Pease, Julian E. Szarlan, Paul B. Lovell, John R. Nothe and Gaylin Bingle.

Al Wilcox was also present for this meeting.

Mr. Hasenjager called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. The minutes of the previous meeting were accepted with a motion by Mr. Pease and seconded by Mr. Szarlan.

OLD BUSINESS:

Seasonal Help – Paul said he is starting to fall behind as he has been working on trimming shrubs and still has footings that need to be installed as well as the grass that needs mowing. Mr. Szarlan asked Paul about the new budget and Paul told him the Cemetery Department was level funded. Paul also stated he has been looking into temp agencies as he would be able to keep the help longer without having to pay the unemployment. If we were to pay someone $8.00 per hour the agency would get 50% making the total owed to the agency $12.00. Mr. Szarlan suggested placing an ad in the newspaper. Mr. Hasenjager inquired about the two boys who worked in the cemeteries last summer and Paul said one was unable to perform the job without being watched and the other was undependable as he didn’t show up half of the time. John said he would like to take two weeks of vacation this winter to go to Florida and might need an operation prior to that. Mr. Wilcox suggested part timers who work for the cemeteries in Brimfield, Wales or Holland to see if they are interested in obtaining more hours by working here also. After discussing this further, Mr. Szarlan made a motion to hire one person from the temp agency. Mr. Pease seconded the motion.

NEW BUSINESS:

Wall on Mill Street – Paul said three blocks have fallen out of the wall on Mill Street. He has tried to call Randy Pascale to see if he would give us a price to repair this. Paul hasn’t heard back from Randy yet and might try James Finnegan instead. Mr. Szarlan asked if this could be fixed with mortar mix. Paul said probably, but he doesn’t have the time. The commissioners agreed unanimously to just leave the wall alone for now.

Computer – The hard drive let go on the computer. A new zip drive was added for $50.00 to help with storing the burial information. The total cost of repair was $274.98 and was done at Post Computer in Wilbraham.

Summer Help – Paul said two school aged boys will be working at the cemetery department this summer. They are free to the department as they are hired through a grant with the help of the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission. Due to their ages they are not allowed to operate any power equipment, but can rake, paint, pick up trimmings, etc. The Pioneer Valley Planning Commission will supply any paint that is needed, paint brushes, gloves, etc.

Mr. Pease made a motion to adjourn the meeting at 9:45 a.m. Mr. Szarlan seconded the motion.

Respectfully Submitted,

Gaylin Bingle
